One word to describe Mondays…RUSH. What is it about this blinking day that makes so many of us completely miserable, tired and impatient?
We all know the feeling…weekends over, no more sleeping in, we have to sort out a million things before breakfast and still on top of that, manage to beat the Monday morning chaotic traffic. Complete nightmare!
Here are a few pointers to beat the Monday morning blues:
1. Fuel Up
Ask any athlete, fitness model, sportsman or dietician, breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS): “Eating breakfast has long term health benefits. It can reduce obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.” There is nothing worse than waking up late on a Monday and having to skip breakfast, pull on some mismatched or wrinkled outfit, whilst rushing out the house. Build in a little extra time by waking up 15 minutes or a half hour earlier so that you can enjoy your coffee before being bombarded by phone calls, questions from co-workers, and project updates. A healthy breakfast won’t only have your glucose levels restored but it will help improve your mood and lower stress levels. There’s no better time to fuel up.
Not literally. Play some of your guilty pleasure / upbeat music on the way to work. We all have that one music artist that we hate to admit we like. Listening to some of your favourite tunes will automatically uplift your mood.
3. Splurge on a Sneaky Snack
Treat yourself to an extra candy or chocolate bar. If you’re dieting, let Monday be your splurge day or at-least have a clean treat. There are thousands of clean eating recipes that have your name written all over them on the Internet. If you’re going to feel miserable today, don’t let your lack of carbs take you down, too!
4. Shake it Off!
Learn to shake it off. In other words, don’t sweat the small stuff. You know that annoying co-worker who is highly opinionated and thinks he/she knows absolutely everything or maybe you had a negative customer complaint that really didn’t make matters any better. Just take a deep breath and brush it off. In the grand scheme of things, they really don’t matter. Whatever you do, don’t vent your built up emotions out on social media. Badmouthing your company or co-workers never gets any likes.
5. Create a Plan of Action
Imagine if football teams never mapped out their match strategy before a big game. They would have no action plan as to what the best way would be to take on their opponents. Start your Monday off on the right foot by arriving a little earlier to work. This not only eases you into the start of your work day, but it also gives you a little extra time to plan what you need to get done by the end of the week. Having a list of weekly tasks really helps ensure an effective work week. Make sure to prioritize properly – doing the easiest task first isn’t always the best option. Plan your ‘to do’ list from the most urgent to the least.
It Can’t be Monday Forever!
Great news is Monday doesn’t last forever. It is just one day of the week after all. Yes, Monday is the day to be back at the grindstone, but it is also the day to be back at the things you are passionate about. As Steve Jobs once quoted: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.” Life isn’t about working purely for the weekend. It is about making sure you enjoy something in every single day, including the most dreaded day of the week!
We’re pretty certain that Mondays are always going to plague humanity with their high demands of productivity. In the meantime, you can always start the week off with a special breakfast, a good night’s sleep, and a decent cup of coffee! Next week, we will provide you with another 5 tips for a happier Monday.
